On May 2, 2016 Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Mayor’s Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs (MOAPIA) kicked off Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month with the Mayor’s Annual AAPI Heritage Month Celebration at the Howard Theatre.
“Tonight, and throughout this month, we honor the rich heritage and culture of the AAPI peoples and celebrate your many contributions to our city and to our country,” said Mayor Bowser. “The AAPI community is well represented in the District, with more than 32,000 residents; you have influenced on every part of our society from our economy to our politics and to our thriving food scene.”
“I am excited to see the audience enjoy tonight’s program. It truly highlights the rich diversity of our community throughout the District, represented by multi-generations and various AAPI cultures.” said David Do, MOAPIA Director.
Throughout May, MOAPIA continues to celebrate the AAPI Heritage Month by hosting two other events: “Outrageously Funny,” a stand-up with two AAPI comedians on May 17, and “Foodelicious Night,” a food demonstration and panel discussion event on May 24, featuring three local AAPI star chefs. Both events will be held at the Loft at 600 F Street, NW. For more information about AAPI Heritage Month, please visit www.apia.dc.gov.
