(Washington, D.C.) – Mayor Vincent C. Gray and the Mayor’s Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs (OAPIA) today declared the month of May as Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month.
“I would like to acknowledge the contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islanders in the District of Columbia,” said Mayor Gray. “Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders play a vital role in shaping the city’s economy through small businesses and consumer spending. They are vested in community issues and add to the diversity of the city, helping to build a more sustainable and prosperous union in our great ’One City.’”
OAPIA will recognize and celebrate the contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in American history. Visit www.apia.dc.gov to see a full listing of events held throughout May.
“OAPIA is always available to serve the AAPI community through direct services and programs, especially during the month of May,” said Soohyun “Julie” Koo, Director of OAPIA. “In addition, OAPIA events are open to all residents, allowing everyone an opportunity to experience the rich culture of the AAPI community.”
